The Gatherists was initiated with the idea of bringing creative people together in a casual way over coffee and cake. Working as freelance creatives, we — Margot van der Krogt & Marieke Verdenius — felt like we missed an opportunity to meet the many people whose work we had seen, read about and admired online and off. While social media channels like Instagram are great sources of inspiration (we, too, met via the app) nothing can compare to face-to-face interactions.
What started in June 2017 in Amsterdam with a small group of our friends has now grown into a small community of likeminded creatives. We usually meet monthly at Marieke’s atelier in small gatherings of 12 people to share what we’re working on and even struggling with, and hopefully inspire one another. There’s no program, hidden agenda or end goal. In June 2023 we marked our 41st edition and we look forward to organize many more.
Since 2019 Marieke solely hosts The Gatherists, inviting creative-minded friends to co-host the get togethers with her in Amsterdam or elsewhere in The Netherlands and sometimes even abroad. We aim to become a platform for the creation of new connections and eventually new ideas, projects, collaborations or even friendships. Because sometimes all you need to fuel your passion is a lovely conversation and a slice of homemade apple pie!

I met Joanna back in June 2018 during a gathering of The Gatherists and we’ve been friends since then. Her genuine approach and authentic sense of style have always stood out to me. In a world where so many choose the same, she explores unconventional paths, discovers new resources and nurtures connections with creatives from near and far. Our shared love for connecting with others, telling stories, and fostering creativity has drove us to organize an edition of The Gatherists at her store in The Hague. The doors are open for you to join our 43rd edition!

The Gatherists is a unique concept that likes to travel too! We co-hosted get togethers with fellow creatives in London, Florence, Copenhagen and Edinburgh. But also closer to home in multiple cities in The Netherlands, where we search for the beautiful studios and ateliers where we can experience how creatives, makers and artists work. Like a coffee roastery, a gallery and interior studio or the workplace of a ceramicist or woodworker!
